The Iocan Inquisition stole the Rood icon, making of it a symbol of how extreme their "faith" was, that they would cut the symbol into the backs of captured Müllenkamp faithful, to torture them. The Rood of Iocus was originally a symbol tattooed on the back of the Kiltia priestess Müllenkamp, and the Blood Sin was originally the Müllenkamp Kiltians' name for the terrible crimes committed against them by the Iocans. A Neo-Iocan conjuration ritual strikes the prosperous city of Leá Monde with a great earthquake, to create of the dark energy of its lost souls a "Wellspring" of The Dark, and the followers of Müllenkamp are all but wiped from the face of Ivalice. A literal witch hunt of her followers by the Inquisition kills and tortures them in a massacre they call the Blood Sin. The influence of the Iocus priesthood and their cult increases until magic is outlawed and Müllenkamp's religion is branded a cult. Amidst this clamor of intolerance, Müllenkamp and the Neo-Kiltians can do nothing but simply practice their religion, but in doing so are damned. Saint Iocus and the cult he surrounded himself with began preaching against the use of magicks. The Dark as it exists today was not from that time the magic is corrupted and grown stronger since the souls of the city's entire population were sacrificed by the Neo-Iocans. ![]() The carved letters on the walls of Leá Monde is said to be in ancient Kildean, so it is most likely that the original magic was created in Müllenkamp's Leá Monde or before. There are few CRPGs today that can’t trace their heart and soul back to Ultima. Ultima games never failed to be complex in both technology and the human element, pushed both to lofty heights and blazing the way for the entire computer RPG genre. Unlike the massively-multiplayer online games popular today, Ultima had more noble goals than accumulating loot and relentlessly grinding for random crap so you can go grind for more random crap somewhere else. Unlike the pure hack-and-slash dungeon crawling of Wizardry and its many clones, Ultima had increasingly intricate and adult plots and stories. Unlike the ‘roguelikes’ of the college mainframe making screens out of ASCII characters, Ultima had eye-popping, high-tech computer graphics. Complex stories and worlds that challenge the player’s sense of morality and justice form the largest part of Ultima‘s appeal and are undoubtedly the games’ greatest contribution to the art. Virtues are Britannia’s understanding of ethics, and one of the primary jobs of the player is not just to stop evil by wit and arms, but to uphold the Virtues and embody what it means to be a hero for the grateful people of Britannia. Starting in the fourth installment, Ultima also focuses less on simple amoral hack-and-slash treasure hunting like that which was (and still is) popular in most so-called ‘role-playing’ games, and introduces a system of Virtues which the series would follow thereafter. A town in Ultima IV grows and changes and might become a bustling metropolis by Ultima VII, or a deserted ghost town, and landmarks like Castle British, the wizard’s town of Moonglow, and the dark depths of the Great Stygian Abyss are visited many times over the course of the series. Starting with the fourth game in the series, Britannia’s geography becomes largely stable, and it really does become a familiar world, changed by the passage of time (and graphics technology) that you watch develop in response to your actions. One of the game’s defining conceits is that the character you are playing is you, your own stand-in it is you who travels to this new land to right wrongs and have grand adventure, making lifelong friends along the way and growing to be part of this far-off land. In Ultima the player, called the Stranger from Another World and later the Avatar, is transported from Earth to the fantasy world of Britannia at the behest of benevolent monarch and author alter-ego Lord British to fight the forces of injustice. That autumn, the teenager starts classes at the University of Texas, and with his roommate begins writing another game to top his previous success. It was the first international prize for a Japanese artist after the Second World War. In 1950 at the Sao Paulo Biennale, his work Steady Gaze (Flower) won the Japanese Ancestry in Sao Paulo Prize. In 1948, Saitō exhibited at the Salon Printemps, an event sponsored by Americans for Japanese Artists. ![]() He then drew a finalized panoramic view that he divided into several prints to create a series. In the first stages of print production, Saitō created a pencil sketch of the area he wished to depict. Rather than depicting something for how it looks in real life, Saitō was interested in the reduced shapes, muted and unexpected colors, and the core essence of his subjects and settings. ![]() His began to show prints with bold, simple, flat and solid areas of color and texture. Saitō’s prints developed over the course of his artistic career. His series of Persimmon in Aizu, Harvest in Aizu, Houses in Aizu and others are also well-known. In 1938, Saitō issued his first prints in his now famous Winter in Aizu series, scenes of nature and architecture set in his hometown in Aizu, Fukishima. Also through his acquaintance with Onchi, Saitō was exposed to galleries where American purchasers began to take an interest in his work. They gathered once a month to discuss their prints. In the same year, Saitō met other renowned artists such as Umetaro Azechi (1902-1999) and Gen Yamaguchi (1896-1976) through artist Kōshirō Onchi’s (1891-1950) Ichimokukai (First Thursday Society). This exposure influenced Saitō to make woodblock his primary medium. Saitō mainly worked with oil paint until his invitation from fellow woodblock print artist, Tadashige Ono (1909-1990), to join the Zokei Hanga Kyōkai (Plastic Print Association) in 1938. In 1936, Saitō began experimenting with woodblock prints and exhibiting works with Nihon Hanga Kyōkai (Japanese Creative Print Association). Later this type of wood became scarce, so during the last 20 years he worked with shina nuki (a type of plywood). Early in his career, Saitō used katsura wood ordered from Hokkaido - one of Japan’s islands and echizen hosho (mulberry paper) that he special-ordered from a paper dealer in the Fukui Prefecture. Saitō was a sōsaku hanga (creative print) artist, meaning his work was self-drawn, self-carved and self-printed - an artistic process practiced by many modern Japanese artists as a collective departure from traditional publishing houses, which utilized a division of creative and labor art practices. He is also known for his depictions of women adorning elaborate traditional Japanese kimono fashions, maiko dancers, images of animals, haniwa burial figures, shrines in Kamakura, and imagery inspired by travels in the U.S., Mexico, and Europe. Saitō’s work portrays images of traditional Japanese landscapes and rural architecture. As a result, Saitō incorporated elements of modernism, cubism, abstract expressionism, and impressionism in his work. However, in his early adulthood, the emerging artist was exposed to the works of European modernist painters like Munch, Mondrian, Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky, and Gaugin. ![]() Saitō’s initial artwork was characterized by a focus on realism and three-dimensionality. In 1932, Saitō moved to Tokyo to study Western-style painting at the Hongo Painting Institute. By the time he was twenty, Saitō established his own successful sign-painting business. At just five years old, he apprenticed as a sign-painter in Hokkaido, Otaru and studied drawing with artist Gyokusen Narita. Kiyoshi Saitō was born in Aizubange, Japan on April 27, 1907. Therefore, to keep your camera stable for crisp images, you should use a tripod. Shooting with a tilt-shift camera is quite hands-on, as there are lots of moving parts to operate when you’re shifting and tilting your lens. Using aperture values of f/11 or f/22 will help keep everything sharp and focused in your image. Using a deep depth of field you can get the most out of your camera’s tilting effect. Tilt-shift photography tips Use a deep depth of field By tilting your camera lens at an upwards angle, you can correct the distortion, and make the width of the tree appear proportional. Have you noticed that when you photograph trees, the tree trunk appears thicker than it is, making the tree appear disproportionately tapered? This is because you’re standing closer to the base, creating the illusion of it being bigger. You can shift the camera upwards so that the upper part of the tree is in the frame, while still allowing the tree to appear straight. Here is where the tilt-shift lens can be of use. But the issue with pointing your camera at an upwards angle is that it distorts the lines of the trees – rather than standing straight, the upwards angle creates the illusion of the trees bending in towards each other. You want to angle your camera upwards, to capture the branches of the trees. What is a real-world example for a tilt-shift lens that isn’t architectural photography? Imagine that you’re photographing some trees in the woods. You can then merge the composite images in Photoshop, to create the perfect panorama. The shifting lens allows you to shoot three bracketed images of different areas, all while the camera remains static. Tilt-shift lenses are excellent devices for shooting panoramas, as you don’t have to pan the camera. The lens can also shift up and down or side to side, to change perspective control, and to shoot panoramas. The lens can tilt to varying angles to change a plane of focus or to maximise or minimise a depth of field. Photographers who practice miniature faking use the tilting function of the tilt-shift lens to create a high angle, creating the effect of looking down at the scene. The blurred effect can be done in-camera, or by digitally editing the photo. ![]() This is done by blurring parts of the photo to simulate the shallow depth of field, which makes the miniature look like real-life close-up photography. ‘Miniature-faking’ is the process of making a photograph of a life-size location look like a photograph of a miniature scale model. It has also become closely associated with miniature-faking. In this article on tilt-shift photography for beginners, we will be covering:Īs we mentioned, tilt-shift photography was designed for and is still used for architectural photography. However, uses for tilt-shift lenses have evolved – photographers enjoy using them as it gives them wider areas to capture. Having a shifting lens is important for architectural photography, as shooting at the wrong angle distorts the lines of the building design which renders the photos useless for architects. Tilt-shift lenses were originally designed for architectural photography to correct the perspectives of buildings in photographs.
